Prof Dr Veale was nothing less than understanding during my sister's initial assessment. He made her feel understood and gave her hope that with hard work she could have a better quality of life. I really like the fact that he could laugh with his patients, not to ridicule, but to support the patient in understanding that OCD rituals, in most cases, are ridiculous. He was honest with the diagnosis and the hard work that needed to be put in, which is exactly what patients need to hear. Especially, when successful outcomes are predominently down to the attitude and determination of the patient. In my opinion, to get a diagnosis and suggested therapy, from an expert is worth every penny. Especially as a report from Dr Veale could be pivitol in sourcing the right care for a loved one in the community.

I have had a couple of consultations with professor veale and I am astounded by some of these unkind assessments of him on here. He is a genuinely kind, caring, empathetic person who really knows what he is doing. I think considering the particular area that he works in, he will be prone to being idealised and then devalued and discarded by his patients, which may explain some of the reviews on here.

I saw that he had written books and publicly was saying that he was trying to portray an image of being a decent caring person. Then when you walk past him he completely blanks you. The guy to me come across like he has a disability related to social interaction with people. I had OCD, and have been treated at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, where he works and I think Id rater read his books then speak to him in person. I think one of the dangers of psychiatry is that unlike psychiatry, which is massively oversubscribed and they can pick the brightest and the best psychiatrist is desperately struggling to recruit people. As a result, they end up with people who ponce around with a sense of entitlement having spent most of their time in luxurious private hospitals being given jobs on massive pay grades, even though they lack the most basic skills of human interaction.

Response from Professor David Veale

thank you. I am sorry to hear you felt I ignored you or had a sense of entitlement as this was not my intention.

Prof Veale has known me for many years now and has been my consultant at the priory as an inpatient for 2 years. During this time he has been committed to helping me, honest, caring, compassionate. He can be brutally honest at times which I prefer than to sugarcoat things. He also has a great depth of knowledge of all mental illness / I was treated for BDD and bipolar. Dr veale treated both successfully. I think I would be dead if it weren't for the priory and dr veale. In the past I nearly succeeded but I'm now a survivor

Professor Veale has been my specialist for about ten years now and has helped me an incredible amount throughout that time. I find him to be a warm, caring specialist who has always cared about my recovery and frankly, without his help, I wouldn't be well now. His knowledge of BDD is second to none, he really is a leading force in the fight against BDD and depression/anxiety and has helped me where no-one else could. Working with him to get some control back in my life and get over my illness has been a long but worthwhile journey and it's simple - if you have severe BDD (I was housebound and suicidal at the time) then see Professor Veale - he literally saved my life. He is also a trustee of the BDD Foundation and this shows his care and compassion towards sufferers - he really does understand and he really does care.
